The Hollywood dream is not as far as you think for Malaysians! Last year it was announced that a Malaysian will be writing the next Pixar film. Recently more details have been released on the upcoming movie during the D23 Expo. The animated film first came to the attention of many in 2017 when Disney shelved development for Gigantic, a retelling of the classic tale Jack and the Beanstalk. President of Walt Disney and Pixar Animations Studio Ed Catmull announced that they would like to focus on another project that has been in the works.
With a slated release of November 25, 2020, all we knew back then was that the movie will be written by PJ Pride Adele Lim. During the Walt Disney Studios panel at D23 Expo, reps from Pixar announced not only the title of the film but also released an all-new concept art!
Just Announced: Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon, starring @cassandrasteele (Raya) and @Awkwafina (Sisu, the Last Dragon). Check out all-new concept art, and see the film in theaters November 2020. #D23Expo pic.twitter.com/V40bv64IIp

About Raya and the Last Dragon
Raya and the Last Dragon will bring viewers on an epic fantasy adventure based on South East Asian themes. The film will be set in a realm called Lumandra with 5 clans forming the land of the dragon. Raya is the young protagonist determined to find the last dragon in the realm. Cassandra Steele, better known as Cassie, will lend her voice to Raya while rapper and comedian Awkwafina will play the last dragon named Sisu.
Just hearing about Awkwafina’s involvement in the film already has us excited! We are even more excited now that the theme of the movie has been announced. This is not the first time Awkwafina and Adele have worked together though. Adele was previously involved with the production of Crazy Rich Asians as a co-writer. The chance to lead the animated film came after her success from the Asian focussed comedy. Prior to Crazy Rich Asians, Adele actually has a hand in numerous TV series like Xena: Warrior Princess, One Tree Hill, and Las Vegas just to name a few.
The Malaysian Pride
Adele is a graduate from SMK (P) Sri Aman, she moved to Boston, Massachusetts, to further her education. She once reminisced that after graduating her initial plan was to return to Malaysia to head into copywriting and advertising. It was thanks to a motivation from a boy she met in college asking her to move to LA together did she had the opportunity to jump on the bandwagon of writing for television screenplays!
We truly cannot wait until Raya and the Last Dragon comes out and we look forward to more of Adele’s work on the Hollywood silver screen!
