Review : Sitka Restaurant

By Pamela Victor
June 21, 2016

Disguised as the more simplistic and minimalistic lots along the Jalan Batai row, Sitka Restaurant has its flavours to prove the contrary. The team behind Sitka takes pride in using fresh local produce to experiment with a variety of tastes and tangs. This unpretentious restaurant serves up a vast range of combinations starting from breakfast right up to dessert. Expect dishes that complement flavours of sweet and savoury, rich and light all at the same time. Getting inspiration from the Studio upstairs, the Restaurant’s menu is more accessible, but never played down.

Our Picks:
Chilli Beef Porridge

Made with a mixture of Scottish oats and rice into a creamy blend, it was topped with pickled ginger that added a kick with a 64-degree egg in the centre, alongside premium soy and of course, heavily-spiced minced beef to satisfy the ‘Asian’ tongue. It was the perfect mishmash of creaminess and spiciness.

Salt Baked Beets with Citrus

Local beets, orange, hummus and chickpeas, who knew that this combination of flavours would work but it was indeed a surprise to the palate. The lightness of the citrus and beet alongside the sharpness of the wild ginseng leaves (which they source from Janda Baik) highlighted the flavours of the chickpeas and hummus, providing a fresher taste to the salad.

Free Range Duck Confit

An ideal combination of savoury and sweetness as the Buttermilk waffle is coupled a fried duck egg providing extra richness to the duck confit itself and whipped maple butter with mustard seeds. The waffle was thick, but crispy on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside, making the duck the star of the dish as supposed.

White Chocolate Cream

More like white chocolate dream! A white chocolate panna cotta with milk crumble, topped with white sorrel and thai basil oil. If you think it sounds like a mouthful, it’s because it is! The biggest surprise comes from the citrusy flavour of the sorrel that complements the richness of the white chocolate while the thai basil oil provides a soothing fragrance that tones down the overall flavour.
