Widely known as an #ArmBalanceJunkie on Instagram, Under Armour fitness ambassador Robyn Lau talks to MC about her favourite yoga poses and what it takes to lead a yoga class.
When did you first start your fitness journey?
I’ve always been a pretty active kid. I started swimming and playing tennis at the age of six. Throughout high school and university, I’ve always dabbled into some form of sport (running, badminton, rock climbing), but it wasn’t until I was 18 where I started my yoga journey and never looked back since. A common misconception is that you have to be flexible to be able to advance in your practice, what is also important is the element of strength, which I gain from weight training, 4-5 times a week at the gym.
What is the best fuel for your body?
It is always important to hydrate your body. Drink enough water before, during and after any workouts to keep yourself from being dehydrated. I don’t follow a strict diet plan, as I’m a foodie. But I maintain a healthy diet overall by eating high quality, natural foods such as whole-grains, fruits and vegetables. I get my protein sources from deep sea fishes, plant based protein powder and healthy fats from nuts, coconut oil and avocados. Chocolate cakes and ice cream on weekends is a must!
Where can we find you on your days off?
I work seven days a week, so I don’t have ‘days off’. But I do get a couple of hours off in between classes, which I’ll be spending those times working out at the gym, grocery shopping, walking my dog Riley at the dog park or digging into a cake at a cafe somewhere! I do make it a point to take a break from my daily life by traveling a couple of times a year. I’ll be heading to California this summer and then hiking Mount Rinjani in the 4th quarter of 2018.
Favourite yoga poses?
I am an arm balance junkie. So I incorporate it into all my personal yoga practice and classes that I teach. Arm balance poses challenge and encourages the body to focus and balance. I believe it is in these moments of stillness that we gain strength. Practising arm balances also helps you move past your fear of falling, in which promotes the concept of self-esteem and self-confidence. You will notice in my social media profile that I am always doing a #StopDropHandstand post!
What gives you the most satisfaction from teaching a yoga class?
Being introduced to yoga at a young age has saved me from multiple struggles. I grew up hardly ever experiencing depression or anxiety because through my yoga practice, I’ve learnt how to control my mind and breathing in difficult situations. Many I know, practiced yoga, and were given the chance to crawl out of their old skin and to glow again. It is an honour to be able to give back by teaching students to create a sacred yoga practice for themselves, alleviating their pains and aches while building mental strength and confidence.
