Osaka and nearby Kyoto are synonymous with rich culture, grandiose temples, and picturesque gardens; think Osaka Castle, Kiyomizu-dera and Ginkaku-ji, which make for a very zen holiday. While these attractions are beautiful and serene, what’s a traveller to do when she or he is hankering after some adrenaline pumping, good ol’ hair-raising fun? With premier attractions like the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan and Nifrel Living Museum, Universal Studios Japan, Harukas 300 and Osaka Legoland as well as a slew of wonderful food destinations there’s no shortage of excitement to be had right in Osaka itself! Here are our top thrill-seeking destinations guaranteed to bring back the fun in your life.
- Universal Studios Japan
There’s no argument here…Universal Studios Japan (USJ) is hands down be the destination of choice for adrenaline junkies in Osaka. With over five roller coaster rides including the dreaded hair-raising backward Hollywood Dream ride, there’ll always be something to captivate the imagination (and up the fear factor). As queues are crazy during peak holiday periods (I visited on a school holiday! 🙁 ), plan your route wisely and map out the rides and attractions you absolutely must go on to avoid wasting time getting lost on the way there (like I did). If possible, go early and be prepared to wait in line…sometimes for hours!
If you have the time, visit all the areas in USJ. Otherwise, just head for the main attractions: Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, Despicable Me Minion Mayhem, Flying Dinosaur and The Amazing Adventures of Spiderman are among the must-visits in the park. If you aren’t inclined to wait (like me!) go for the less popular rides which are still good IMHO and you may get to enjoy more of the park because you’ll be spending less time waiting in line.
Bookings: In order to avoid disappointment e.g. being turned away at popular rides during peak hours, buy your tickets ahead of time and purchase an express pass to beat the queue. The easiest and most economical way to purchase this is through the Klook mobile app available at the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
