Beautiful, independent and effervescent – these women prove that the only limit in life is the one you set for yourself. Here, they share their thoughts on feminism, and the values they live by.
"It's not about being superior to men. It's having the OPTION to do what we want."
The Cool Cats: Yong Mei Fong and Yong Mei Ling
The Yong sisters are polar opposites, yet hold their own in every way possible. Mei Fong is a Senior Associate in Corporate Restructuring for multinational consulting firm Ernst & Young. Mei Ling is a multi-talented restaurateur who is currently balancing the Baba Nyonya Restaurant, Tigerlily Thai Restaurant, and a cake company called Lemon Daisy Cakes.
Thoughts on female empowerment and feminism
MF: I feel strongly on equality in the work place, where women and men should be treated the same. I would love to see more opportunities for women to be their own boss and be more involved in decision-making roles and not be depicted by society as too emotional or sensitive to run a business or company. However, I do see this issue slowly being turned around in society.
ML: It’s about choice: the choice to be whoever you want, do whatever you want, and cultivate a life that you want. It’s the freedom to choose what works for you. Ultimately, being a feminist means that I respect, without judgment or scorn, other women to make a choice for themselves that I might not make myself and to be supportive of those choices.
Words of wisdom
MF: Let’s not allow ourselves to be upset by small things we should despise and forget. Remember “life is too short to be little”.
ML: If you have to choose between being kind and being right, choose being kind and you will always be right.
