#1 Azza Arif, Editor of Marie Claire Malaysia (Malaysia)
She only wanted a week to herself at her new apartment. Her wish came true alongside with the uncertainty about where humanity is heading.
A pandemic. I couldn’t believe I was living through a pandemic. This really feels like I am stuck in a simulation version of Contagion. I remember only a little over a month ago, I had just gotten back from a couple of work-related trips — as Editor of Marie Claire Malaysia, I am constantly on the go — and all I wanted was to have a week to myself at my new apartment, with no disturbance from anyone. I must say, be extremely careful what you wish for! Mother nature made my wish come true, but she also added a few extra features — a virus pandemic and isolation from everything and everyone. And it all happened so fast! Here in Malaysia, with the Movement Control Order, the military along with the police force have been instated to ensure that Malaysians stay at home and keep their movement to a bare minimum. My first thought was, “I can’t visit my family!”, followed by, “how long will this actually last?” which escalated to, “How can I protect my family at all costs?” The world has changed. And along with that change came the uncertainty about where humanity is headed. All I can do is stay indoors and continue, along with my team, to do what we can to keep our media platform for women’s empowerment up and running.
